Where have you been?

Well all, we have been very busy with life. Raising a toddler, 2 dogs, and working full-time jobs has really just kept us from working on a blog! Plus family and friends have been able to keep up with us on Facebook, and Joseph has been working on his WordPress to challenge himself to being in the Word daily, and be more open about his life and faith, and his struggles with both.

Also, at the moment, we are separated (not in a bad way!). Amanda has been asked by the Air Force to go and get her PhD, so she applied and got into University of Maryland in College Park, MD. So, Joseph found a job in Washington, DC, and moved ahead of her and Benjamin to work (and find a house and church).

Hopefully come July 2010, we will be reunited!

When we are Weak, He is Strong... Miracles are Real!

MATTHEW 6:25-26
Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?

That's all we can say... THANK YOU LORD FOR WHO YOU ARE. That's it. We are on the floor, weeping, crying, rejoicing...

A few Miracles have happened yesterday and today that have just given us strength beyond the sorrows. After church, we received an email from someone in Texas who wants to bu your car (amazing!), and this was right after a Pastor had prayed for God to do miracles in our life this week. All we could do after seeing the email (besides taking more pictures of the car as they asked) was rejoice and pray to the Lord, thanking Him non-stop. To some this may be small, but to us it was big!

This morning (Monday) Amanda comes to me around 0645L (6:45am MST, hehe) and wakes me up, she is crying and trying to tell me something was left at the door. My first reaction as a husband is that my wife is crying and said something was at the front door... who's the prankster and who do I have to hunt down! NO!!!! It was nothing even remotely close. She had found on our doorstep a card and a bag of items (baby diapers, dog food, baby food jars, baby wipes, soap, shampoos, toothpaste, and more). We were both thrown back... and in the card was another gift and the scripture of Matthew 6:25-26... and the card, when opened sang the Casting Crowns song, "Praise You In This Storm." This was not big... This was huge!

It was more than we could have ever asked or prayed for... It might not have been a job offer - this was God showing us, in no uncertain terms, that He knows are situation; even when we couldn't see Him through the fog of our situation.

We've prayed and tried to be there for people, maybe not in this exact way, but with our hospitality and food we cooked a free meal and a peaceful place for others to stay...

We pray that we also can be like whom ever the Lord used to do this, and be able to bless people just as much in their time of need as He leads us to do.

God, you are mighty and sovereign, we thank You for who You are and what You are doing; even if we can't see beyond our own two feet. We also thank You for whoever you used on this earth to do what they did for us. We pray you bless them, and they would know our true gratitude and appreciation we have for what happened this morning.

Thank you for being a light in the darkest of nights for myself, Amanda and my child. Though Benjamin may not know of you at this moment (or understand anything related to You), that he will know about You and of You through us as we tell of Your great Mercies, Grace and Blessings upon us, even this day!

Thank you Lord, Thank You Lord. Thank you for everyone in our lives, and thank you for clearing the fog this day!

Prayer Request

Good Evening All,

Hello from Colorado Springs, Colorado! Amanda, Benjamin and I have been in our house since April, and loving every moment of being homeowners. As you know, Amanda is at a new position at the US Air Force Academy (USAFA) and has fit in very well. I, well, have been looking for work since before we moved (about 3 months) and since we’ve moved here. Countless Job fairs, applying for jobs through all the major sites (Monster, CareerBuilder, ClearedJobs, MilitaryHire, etc) as well as applying through specific company sites (Boeing, Lockheed, General Dynamics, SAIC, etc) with no luck.

Also, some may know, I am a part of a ministry (Outstretched Arms International) where I have to raise my own support. Some has come in, for which I am Blessed and grateful. In the large picture of things though, it has not been enough to keep us “okay.” Now, I am not one to argue with the Lord and God of the universe, so I know He has a plan and for now, we don’t know what that is. I continue to move forward with the ministry however I can with what God has brought to us (military members, local friends, neighbors) and we love to be able to minister to them, even if it’s just a simple “hello.”

With the new house, new baby (5 months old in a week!) and the new bills that come with all is much when you’re a one income family. Especially coming down from a dual-income (“dinc”) family. Now, at the moment we are close to being fine right now with her paycheck as a Captain in the Air Force, but as gas, groceries and other amenities start raising their costs, we are finding it harder and harder to have enough money left over to pay for groceries and gas, especially after paying bills (the bills that go up; oil, gas, water, trash). Even trash collection is rising as they charge a “diesel” charge, which goes up now every 2 months. Scary times.

Here’s the prayer request. I (Joseph) need to find work. It’s so bad, that when I apply to places like Wal-Mart and Target – they turn me down due to being “over-qualified.” Yeah. Good times. What makes finding jobs harder, is that all the companies want to hire me for either California, Washington DC, Virginia, Nevada or overseas (i.e. Iraq, Afghanistan). Well, that’s what we need prayers for. Currently a company is interested in me for Virginia (Just across the street from DC basically), another at Vandenberg AFB, CA and the other is a position for a year in Baghdad, Iraq. The others (CA, VA, NV) are permanent positions, in which I will be there for a while. Of course, Amanda and Benjamin WILL NOT be able to follow due to Amanda’s commitment at the USAFA. As a sacrifice, I will need to go out-of-state (or country) to properly support my family. Nothing, and I mean nothing has come up for the local area. That’s what happens when you’re an Intel guy in a Space community. They just don’t like to mix. Amanda and I have talked extensively on all possibilities (whether a year overseas or a permanent position in the US), and that sadly, it would be a benefit to make this kind of sacrifice.

To be specific, I have applied officially for a position in Iraq after being notified that I was “being considered for the selected position” also, a same message was sent for a possible high-position in Virginia. I just had an hour-and-a-half long phone interview for a position (that I’m not sure how I qualified for?) at Vandenberg AFB, CA and they want to me to contact Virginia to continue the dialogue with their higher-ups.

Our prayer request is to do what we are supposed to do… We want to the right thing, even if that means putting many miles between us. Being apart would definitely “suck” but when it’s the only option, what more can you do? As for the ministry, I plan to continue wherever I end up (locally, far away, or farther away) – the mission field starts outside our front door and extends to the farthest reaches of the world! OAI is there for everyone, not just some (not just Colorado)!

Thanks all for taking the time to read this email and lift us up. We appreciate you all.

Sincerely,

Joseph E. Salmoiraghi

Work Seeking, Continued

Well, after a small conversation with Amanda, I have begun to apply for jobs posted that are in Iraq, Afghanistan and other Middle East / Southeast Asian countries. Most of these jobs are for 1 year, and pay well (at least we hope they still do).

It would be without my family... but to help be that support, this is a sacrifice that is becoming the only option...

We shall see... <><

No Work, No Money, School, Lots of Stress and our car is for sale

It's been quite a while since our last update. Stress just doesn't seem to be the word that covers it all.

We are a one-income family at the moment (hopefully not a forever moment). New location, new house, new baby, new school and all the stress that comes with it. I (Joseph) have been to 5 job fairs to no avail. I have applied even at the places of business that are not big companies that do government work (i.e. Wal-Mart, Target, etc.) - where I was either not called back or told I was "over-qualified" for any positions.

I have been searching work since 3 months prior to having to move and since we moved here end of March 2008 (so, about 6 months of searching) through the internet, in-person and job fairs. It almost seems all the effort I put is fruitless. I have a family to take care of and provide for, bills to pay and I am at a loss as what to do that is different from what I am doing. Also, the only jobs that would seem to fit me are positions that are in Denver (which is about 2 hrs - with traffic - each way) or over seas (which is hard due to our 4 month old).

I am still trying, praying and far from giving up. It can be very hard to keep going, but I have much support - First and foremost, my strength comes from the Lord, Second, my wife and my child keep me going when I feel as though I do not have the strength to to even look up.

Okay... on to the positives...

Well, I have lost 15 lbs in just over a month, and I am working out everyday now to make myself healthier (I want to be around for my grandkids and just plain have the energy to play and raise my son). As well as in the process of trying to get back into the reserves as a "weekend warrior." Please be praying I can lose the required weight and pass the entrance physical, this will at least be a partial income to help. So, I am eating better, working out everyday (really, I am working out - some intense stuff) and just doing all I can to be a better Husband and Father to my family.

I am back in school! I am attending Colorado Christian University, studying for a B.S. in Organizational Management in Project Management. Less than a year to go!!!! MAY 2009! Well, I hope all goes well! Thanks to student loans and the amazing Montgomery G.I. Bill, I can finish immediately. I hope and pray the finishing of this degree (or the in-progress part) will help with the job seeking.

Also, we are selling our car, since it's the one you can't fit a baby in, hehe. So, we are hoping it will sell better than a house! So, if you are interested or know someone who is, you can find our car on craigslist (http://cosprings.craigslist.org/car/731604354.html) and firebirdtrader (http://www.camerosandfirebirds.com/page-1503.html) with pictures and some good descriptions of the car.

So yeah, that's life so far...

Holding our heads up high on a cloudy day <><

Planes, Trains & Automobiles?

More like "Dogs, Baby and Automobiles" - yuppers...

Well, it definitely has been a while since our last update... Benjamin David is now 3 months old (as of 8 May), who would have guessed time could pass so quickly? I sure didn't!
We are all moved into our house (in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA!) - well, as moved in as we can be at the moment (still a lot of boxes to go through!). Will have some pictures up as soon as we deem the house "nice" enough to spread pictures around of, hehe.

Well, let's see - updates since we've been here... hmmm...
New dog: "Sammy" a possible Lab / Beagle mix, we adopted him a week ago from PetsMart here in town:

We also had to buy a new vehicle (we discovered that her RAV4 was a little scrunched with two people and a car seat!), so we went and found a used 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee SE 4x4, 4.7L V8, with under 50K on it!

Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA!

Hey all, it has been a long time!
Well, we are BACK in COLORADO!!!!

Thats right. We officially moved into our new house (yes, and actual house - and yes, we own it - well, until the mortgage is paid off, haha)

We moved in around the end of March, and we are still unpacking - oh for Joy! The weather here has been incredible, we had snow fall even as of a few weeks ago, it was great. It is pretty dang windy where we are, but the view from our front door is amazing (a perfect view of Pikes Peak!)

Update on "Amanda and the Great Pregnancy!"

Well, here is the story so far on Amanda and the birthing process on which she is participating on:

Wednesday
1855L.
Starts having contractions that are 30-60 seconds in length and 5 minutes apart. Darn right we got excited.

They last into late evening and sporadic in morning. Intensisty levels on scLe 1-10 are as high as a 6 at times.

Thursday
1030L.
She decides to get checked out to see what is our status with the actual labor. Go to base hospital and get turned into a cyborg for 20 minutes of monitoring. Then awesome Nidwife arrives.

Midwife does checkup; says Amanda is 1 cm dialated, 80% efaced (cervix ready for baby) and she could feel baby's head, meaning he is ready - just waiting for her body to be ready.

So, contractions were her body going into preperations for tv 'big game'

Says baby can be here tomorrow (Friday) or mid-next week. We go home :-)

Friday.

Mother-in-law is flying in.

More to come as it happens...

Vegas Pics

Well, as you may (or may not) know, I was TDY to Nellis AFB, which basically is right next door to Las Vegas. So, I stayed at the Las Vegas Hilton (home to Barry Manilow, The Star Trek Experience, some unknown comedians, the guy who won "America's Got Talent" and a pretty good sized off-strip casino). Here are some pics of my adventures in "Sin City"...

Yes be Yes, and No be No

11 NOV 2007 / 1543L EST

Dearest Family, Friends and the Body of Christ, in whom I reside,

It has been a few days, and that is okay. I attended a wedding this past weekend in New Jersey. It was quite beautiful and full of fun. The ceremony was quite different than most I have experienced; it was Episcopalian and was not very different from Catholic weddings I have seen, except they did not do the “unity” candle. There were homily’s in which the congregation participated in the prayers and the actual ceremony; very meaningful and really got my brain thinking (like that takes much these days…). What if the community of believers (and even non-believers in this sense) at the wedding truly walked out what they spoke out during the ceremony? They were asked to say “We Will” if they would do all they could to make sure the relationship was to last till “death do us part”; of course, as with any large group - every one said it and the ceremony moved on without a skip in the rhythm.

What if? I knew some within the ceremony, friends and family of the bride mostly. I knew of some relational hurts, even of divorces, remarriages, etc. You wonder if people vowed, as well as to help them in their time of hurt, and then when trouble came (in whatever fashion), they chose to not be involved; “it’s their own life, it’s not our place to get in the middle,” or whatever excuse can come to mind that we humans use to not be in peoples lives when they really need us (even though every day when there isn’t trouble, we love to be in the middle of everyone’s business). It’s like when we’re driving on the highway, see a car broken down and think, “oh my, hope thy got a cell phone” and continue driving on; but when it’s us on the side of the road, we hope for help – even in the bright light of the day, most cars just drive by and “wish us well.”

What if? What happened to a community of people that walked by their word, took care of the “least of these” as well as, basically, everyone? I would say pick up your Bible and read Acts, but we know community still happens after that, but that is one of the greatest examples (also see the Mennonites and Amish communities for clearer modern examples, really, seriously – they are communities that don’t have Social Security, mostly no insurance or anything – they take care of their own… hmmm, something to think about?). We all sit there on Sundays, Weddings, Funerals (and any other occasions that deal with actually talking to someone or promising something), and say the usual “Yes’s” and “Amen’s” saying we will be there for them no matter what, or if they ever need anything we will be there… in all honesty, most people say it to be comforting and have no plans or thought to actually act on it. Sad. Truly sad. Now, I don’t say it’s everyone, but I am sure most people in this world have done this at least once, why, just because. It makes stuff go by faster; we can leave the sooner we say what we think “they need to hear.” Basically, the next day, we forget we even agreed to be a true community. Instead, we only think of our own community: Me, Myself and I; if it doesn’t benefit Me, why should I even actually do anything? Scary.

What If? I wonder of the over 100 people at this Wedding ceremony in New Jersey, who actually meant what they said; to be a community for people who take care of their own? You know, what we have become, when our words can’t even match our deeds (and vice-versa). That even as Christians we can’t even be people of our word and not even come close to anything considered Honorable, Trustworthy, Virtuous, maybe even Pure or dare I say… Holy.

What if? It starts with us. Not as Christians, or church members… I mean it starts with us individually (Christian, Muslim, Mormon, Jewish, Athiest). If we can’t change on the singular level; how can something that isn’t even singular multiply? It Can’t. I can talk, others can talk all they want on this subject, but it is all for naught if I (or anyone else) can’t or won’t even change my ways. I know I have been here and there with all of this. I know I have driven past the broken down vehicle too many times when I knew I could’ve taken a little out of my day to assist. I know I have said “I will” when it comes to weddings, funerals, etc to be there for friends and family (and I have been on the receiving end as well) and in a few hours forget I even agreed to help.

“Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’ But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; nor by the earth, for it His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.”

- Matthew 5:33-37 (NKJV) *emphasis added

The scripture referenced really speaks to us Christians on how we really need to be when it comes to how we speak to people. If you don’t intend to actually do as you say, don’t say it! At least if you don’t say it, you will know you are being honest, and if they asked why you didn’t say anything comforting (like, “anything you need, I’m here for you”), at least you can point out that if you said it and didn’t mean it: you would be lying. What friend or family member would want to lie? It seems too many.

This is something I know I need to be changing in my own life. When I responded during the wedding, I really meant it. I really hope that if there is anything we can do to help, even if it’s just an ear to listen, that we can offer at least that. Just because we live many states away doesn’t mean that community ends. Community is in the hearts of its members, no matter the distance. I leave you with that. Goodnight.

Food for the Moment

Hey all,

Just thought I would send a lil’ note as a kind of “food for thought”

Food for the moment:

It is the LORD your God you must follow, and Him you must revere. Keep His commands and obey Him; serve Him and hold fast to Him.” – Deuteronomy 13:4

When you look at this scripture, what comes to mind? For myself, it really hit home with the last part, holding fast to Him. How do we do that today? What does it look like? Can our schedule even fit that, especially when we have work, school, church, families, friends, dinners, etc…. Our life can become so bogged down with all these things. And yes, we can even do church without holding fast to God (but that is whole other area to dive into, maybe for another day…).

Back to the holding; so how can we do this on a daily basis today? I know my day, weeks and months can be pretty full, and I often lose site of my Lord, as if He grows strangely dim and the world outshines… This is not like the old hymn encourages us with: “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, In the light of His glory and grace” (“Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus”, Helen H. Lemmel, 1922). It is even in the midst of our craziness and filled days that we need to keep our eyes on Him, and hold fast to Him.

What does “hold fast” mean? According to the awesome online Dictionary/Thesaurus it means:

Verb

1.

hold fast - stick to firmly; "Will this wallpaper adhere to the wall?"

bind, bond, stick to, stick, adhere

bind - form a chemical bond with; "The hydrogen binds the oxygen"

cling, cohere, adhere, cleave, stick - come or be in close contact with; stick or hold together and resist separation; "The dress clings to her body"; "The label stuck to the box"; "The sushi rice grains cohere"

attach - become attached; "The spider's thread attached to the window sill"

So, a question to ask ourselves is, “am I bonded with my Lord, is there some supernatural superglue in my relationship with God, or am I just using some masking tape here ant here?” Trust me, masking tape does not hold things together well, or for long periods of time (depending on what you are trying to bring together, it may not work at all). Even a little rain, humid day can cause the tape to just fall off. So, where are we in our relationship with God; are we holding fast, or just hanging by a thin thread.

Some things we can all try this week is taking time to talk with Him, whether in prayer, or just talking with Him, really… You don’t have to drop to your knees and cry aloud or say a complicated prayer, just at your desk, while driving, talk to Him. Another is reading His Word, whether with your Bible, or online at www.biblegateway.com, or if you can’t or don’t have physical access, try putting a scripture or two on a sticky note in your wallet/purse/pocket. At least with these options, you can begin to really hold fast to Him, talking to Him and listening to Him and really just seeking Him daily.

Holding fast can seem pretty hard to do when we have trusted others and even ourselves to take care of this and that in our lives. As this verse says, He is the one we are to be looking to, for all things, and it is Him we are to Hold Fast to, always.

I hope this encourages you to begin looking to Him on a daily basis, and not just when you feel you have exhausted your own avenues, no matter what the situation.

Sincerely,

JOE SALMOIRAGHI
